چکیده

Smart Grid refers to an intelligent grid that employs modern information and telecommunication technologies to meet the challenges relating to the power delivery in the future. These challenges are due to, among others, increased use of renewable energy and power supply reliability requirements of modern digital society. In order to fully realise the Smart Grids a new kind of approach for the power system protection is also needed. In this paper the requirements for the protection of the medium voltage (MV) level of Smart Grid are discussed and a new type of adaptive relay protection concept is proposed. Modern relay protection systems use so called intelligent electronic devices, IEDs. They are devices that have both data processing and telecommunication capabilities. This makes them suitable platforms for an advanced protection system design. The novel protection concept proposed in this paper is based on the distributed intelligence located in the IEDs and seamless messaging capabilities between all the IEDs in the system.

Adaptive Setting of UFLS Relay Using Hourly Programming with Consideration of Renewable Energy Sources in Smart Grid

In the light of the emergence of smart grids, the functions associated with this type of grids in the blocks of the energy management system require the adoption of robust strategies in order to provide a higher level of control and protection. Under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) sheds load blocks when the frequency drop is below the threshold limit. In adaptive UFLS, in an advanced telecommun...

An adaptive protection infrastructure for modern distribution grids

The presence of renewable energy resources and conventional distributed generation (DG) in modern distribution networks challenges the traditional protection schemes, since the radial single-fed concept is no longer adopted. In this paper, a new adaptive protection system, which takes advantage of multiple relay setting groups (SGs) and optimisation techniques, is introduced. Moreover, a hardwa...

Advanced and Adaptive Protection for Active Distribution Grid

Classic protection schemes for existing distribution systems designed for passive and radial networks have been shown to be inadequate for emerging distribution grids. A new protection paradigm, architecture and philosophy are required in response to changes in behaviour of fault currents. These changes are due to the introduction of distributed generation and flexible network topologies, micro...

Optimal Combined and Adaptive Protection of Active Distribution Networks Considering Different System Topologies Incorporating Optimal Selection of Standard Relay Curves

The change in the topology of active distribution networks (ADNs) is one of the essential challenges that might affect the protection schemes. The conventional protection schemes based on base topology result in some coordination constraint violations in other topologies due to the outage of upstream substations and distributed generation units. In this article, new combinational and adaptive p...

Zone-3 Impadance Reach Setting of Distance Relays by Including In-feed Current Effects in an Adaptive Scheme

The undesired operation of zone 3 may be one of the most conspicuous protective relay features due to the incorrect zone 3 relay operations which have been conducive to the severity of blackouts. Therefore, determining the accurate zone 3 setting of the distance relay is deemed to be necessary. This paper focuses on the development of a new technique for calculating zone-3 setting of distance r...
